Benefits of Therapy

Christine Viner • 19 February 2022

There always seems to be a real mystery about what counselling is or what it can do; it is hard to know what to expect and some people are afraid to start the journey.  This fear is compounded by the anxiety of telling a total stranger, very personal things.

It is difficult to give a clear definition of what will happen whilst seeing a counsellor. This is because a counsellor doesn't provide their clients with the answers, instead they offer the client tools to find answers themselves.  For example, whilst driving a car, your counsellor is a passenger in the front seat, but you, the client, are behind the wheel.  A passenger offers assistance with reading the map and providing directions, but its up to you to choose the turns you'll take, and ultimately, the destination.

Here are some of the ways your counsellor can help you feel safe to drive the car and help you to navigate your journey:

  • You are accepted by the therapist for who you are.

  • Therapy can offer a supportive, non-judgemental and confidential setting in which you can explore any issue.

  • It can help you see issues more objectively.

  • It can help you express your feelings and come to terms with experiences.

  • It can help build self-esteem and confidence

  • It can help you take control of your life and become more assertive.

  • It can improve communication and aid building healthy relationships.

  • It can help you become more realistic in setting goals.
